Meet Edgar

We have a new addition to the coop. Edgar is an Americauna Rooster. We put him in the run while the hens were free ranging. They didnt pay each other any mind! So soon afterwards we put the hens in the coop and they checked each other out. Edgar seemed a little intimidated by our head hen (a Rhode Island Red) but they seemed to do pretty well together.
Our two Americauna hens seemed more interested in Edgar than the others. I found this interesting. I hope Edgar will become protective over the girls and not allow our Dachshund to eat anymore chickens!  I also hope we can eventually watch some baby chicks hatch!

We now have 8 hens, 1 rooster and 4 chicks.   three chicks (one the the chicks died)

Country Life

We woke to this sight.
A baby Opossum dead in the floor and our little Dachshund proud of herself.
Apparently when my husband went to the car one night, leaving the front door open, this critter decided to come on in. That night Maggie woke me barking and going crazy digging under a chest in the foyer. I thought it was a mouse somewhere. For a few days she went to a closet and sat and stared and whined. We had no idea it was because this critter was inside! Last night we didn't lock Maggie in her kennel and this is what she did while we slept.
Creeps me out that it was inside but happy our little Maggie kills critters like this!

We bought Plymouth Rock!

Today we bought some babies. Im so excited as they are one of my favorite types of chickens.
These babies went with us to the grocery store.
Once we got home, they were placed under the heat lamp where they will stay for a few weeks.
They will get medicated feed and water until we are ready to introduce them to the flock.
So far, my favorite chickens are Barred Rock (Plymouth Rock) and Americauna.
These are Barred Rock chicks.

Red & The Pledge

Please watch this and think about it........  The Pledge

My Baby Girl asked why we have the Pledge of Allegiance and this is what The Husband wanted her to see. Its something our children today NEED to see and think about.

What a Day!

My shoulder has been giving me a very hard time for a few months. Nothing made it feel completely better so I finally went to the Orthopedic Doctor today. I have Bursitis and had a Cortisone shot. Yes, they are painful but hopefully over the next day or two my shoulder will start to feel better.

After work I returned home to find out our Miniature Dachshund attacked our largest chicken (Big Mama) again. My Husband had to put her (the chicken) down :( My Baby Girl is upset because I had been letting Big Mama roam freely due to the fact that the other chickens were pecking her so badly she couldn't heal.

We are down to 8 cchickens.

News from the Coop

We have various colors, sizes and shapes of eggs that we gather from our hens.
Some are green, blue, tan, brown and white. When a hen first starts to lay, sometimes the eggs are tiny. Aren't they cute? The trouble with tiny eggs?
They have no yolks! We gathered 4 tiny eggs recently which is curious since we thought all of them were already laying.  Chicken keeping is sure educational!

One of my favorites

This is my favorite flower! Id rather get a bouquet of buttercups (daffodils) than roses.
I don't know what it is about these bright yellow flowers but I love all the various types of them.
The yellow and slightly orange ones make me happy!
This one is in my front yard. I smile every time I see it. Its one of the signs and joys of spring.
Whats your favorite flower?
